Rubitano is back for Mayfield-Smith
By Jo Adams of Racenet 21/07/02

Brian Mayfield-Smith's Group One winning Rubitano resumed yesterday at Caulfield and blew his rivals away in the $100,000 John Monash Stakes (1000m).

Rubitano (by RUBITON (AUS) from MRS. SOFFEL (AUS)) last started in the Group One VRC Newmarket Handicap at Flemington in March, yesterday it was as he'd never been away. He won going away, by one and three quarters of a length, to Ruby Slipper with the winner's stablemate Prince Rubiton third.

Mayfield-Smith believes Rubitano 's strength and his temperament are the keys to his success.

Rubitano may well now follow in his sire's footsteps and run in the $3M Cox Plate, a race Rubiton won in 1987.

The four year-old will next run in the Bletchingly Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 and possibly have a tilt at the Group One $350,000 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 12 as a lead up to the Cox Plate on October 26.

The gelding has now won eight of his eleven starts with prize-money in excess of $650,000.
