Rubiton's star is on the rise again
From Stallions.com.au 21/07/02

Rubitano's remarkable career rolled on at Caulfield on Saturday July 20, as he powered away to a first-up win in the LR Sir John Monash Stakes over 1000 metres, which featured a Rubiton trifecta. A feat not performed in a stakes race in Melbourne since the Zabeel trio of Sky Heights, Laebeel and Inaflury ran the trifecta in the 1999 Caulfield Cup. Rubitano (ex Mrs Soffell by The Judge) will be given a chance to eclipse his sire Rubiton to become the third horse to complete the Newmarket Hcp-Cox Plate double in the same year.

Having his first run since prevailing in a blanket finish in the G1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200 metres at Flemington in March, Rubitano scored by 1-3/4 lengths from three-year-old filly Ruby Slipper (ex Liberty Slipper by Loosen Up) with Prince Rubiton (ex My Muse by Sovereign Red) 1-3/4 lengths away in third.

Rubitano has won eight of his 11 starts and Mayfield-Smith is keen to give the rising five-year-old his chance in longer races. With the G1 W S Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 26 was the long-term goal for the gelding who has already earned just under $675,000.

Prince Rubiton will not clash with Rubitano again this spring and will have his next start in the rich Aurie's Star Hcp over 1200 metres at Flemington. Ruby Slipper confirmed her class today, she drew wide but Damien Oliver rode her for pace and managed to cross the field to lead.

Earlier in the day at Cheltenham, Cubiton (ex Holograph by Bletchingly), won the Jeune Handicap over 1000 metres at Cheltenham Park on a dead track. Cubiton covered the 1000 metres in a slick 57.62 finishing the last 600 metres off in a strong 33.60 with a winning margin of 4-1/4 lengths.
